Born in 1899, possibly the original descanso was created 1934. Painted silver over wrought iron. The name is pounded into the metal using what looks like a metal punch, creating outline for the letters.
On an old curving road, the cattle roam free. This descanso is nested under a tree. This area is very close to the border with Mexico. It is very curvy, and doesn't really go anywhere except grazing country for the cattle. More photos at Flickr.com https://flic.kr/p/58m5Dw
Baja California, Mexico - near El RosarioJuly 2010
From what appears to be a horrific accident in 2000, this memorial is a good distance from the highway. I can't assume how far this is from the original accident.
Well tended, keeping his memory alive, there is a candle burning in the mock cab of the truck descanso. I imagine the passion for keeping this memory bright, in the building and maintenance of this site.
Traveling this main road down the peninsula, trucks dominate the road. Maybe drivers are under a lot of pressure to deliver on time, but there were to many dangerous close calls for me with large trucks. I have seen a number of accidents with trucks off the road. This road is really a narrow two lane highway and the only option for commerce.
Descanso for Anthony Acosta Yuma, Arizona A 15 year old boy was hit on his bicycle on January 13, 2011. The driver fled the scene, and was later arrested. Driver received probation under a plea agreement, dismissing the 'leaving-the-scene" charge.
I should have started this a long time ago. I have been photographing Roadside Memorials [Descansos] for years now. Usually southwestern United States and Baja California and Baja California Sur in Mexico. As I record this public mourning and memorials, I am always respectful, and careful not to make my photos just pretty images at the expense of someone's loss. I share many photos on Flickr.com/takkotakko.
